Fløibanen funicular - closed for rebuilding until April 2022

  • Vetrlidsalmenning 23 A, Bergen
  • +47 55336800
  •  /  km From You

Fløibanen will be closed for upgrading from September 20th 2021 until April 1st 2022.

Even if the funicular is closed, the mountain, the hiking trails and the playground is always open!

Walk up to Fløyen:
There are several paths you can walk up to Fløyen from Bergen city centre. The walk takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour depending on your pace and how many stops you make along the way to enjoy the spectacular view.

The first part of the walk follows the same path. From the lower station of Fløibanen on Vetrlidsallmenningen, you walk up past Skansedammen and then to Fjellveien. If you want to get to the top as quickly as possible, Fløysvingene is the route for you. The route starts in Fjellveien by the drinking fountain, about 200 meters north of Fløybanestoppet. As you can deduct from the name, this road turns from Fjellveien and almost straight up the mountain.

Just above Fjellveien you can take a detour from Fløysvingene and continue on the northern route up Fløyen, called Tippetue. This route offers a glorious view of Ytre Sandviken and Byfjorden. This route meets Fløysvingene again at Pilen, about 5 minutes walk from Fløybanen's upper station. Most of Fløysvingene and Tippetue is gravel road.

From Fjellveien you can also choose the road towards the sports facility Skansemyren. On the left side of the sports facility, the road continues upwards. The road is paved and along the way there is a great view of Ulriken and Bergen south. There will be some construction traffic on this road during the upgrading.

Walking routes:
The Funicular takes you to a fantastic area of beautiful natural surroundings with innumerable opportunities for walking and hiking. From Mount Fløyen there are walks on gravel roads and paths to fantastic viewpoints where you can enjoy views of the fjord, mountains and the city below. Check out 10 inspiring walk for the whole family here.

You can also walk from Mount Fløyen to Mount Ulriken. This hike is called Vidden and is one of Bergens most popular mountain hikes. You can walk in either direction, but a lot of people prefer to start at Ulriken and finish at Fløyen which is right in the city center. The hike takes approximately 5 hours and you can read more about the Vidden hike here.

Food and drink at Fløyen:

The charming Fløistuen shop and café offers pastries, ice cream, hot and cold drinks, as well as souvenirs and gifts. At Fløien Folkerestaurant you can enjoy a better meal with the city's finest view. About 10 minutes walk from the station on top, you find the lake Skomakerdiket. Try the Norwegian “svele” and something to drink, with a beautiful view over the water.

Fløistuen cafe is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11 - 18 (until the end of October 2021) and Thursday to Sunday from 11 - 18 (from November until 1 April 2022). The Skomakerdiket cafe is open Saturdays and Sundays at 11 - 16 until 1 April 2022.

Mount Fløyen for children:

Children can have fun at the large playground or try an exciting obstacle course in the forest. Stroll through the mysterious Troll Forest if you dare..
