Overview
Details

Røssdalen is one of this region's wildest valleys with a true wilderness feel. The valley has a rich flora and fauna, which is especially noticeable in spring. Fossjuvet is an imposing melting-water gorge that was blasted away during an ice-age flood.

Fossjuvet in Forsand in Ryfylke is a tempting destination for those who appreciate beautiful wilderness.

From Forsand, drive toward Espedalen and park (free) at the lodge run by Norsk Folkehjelp in Vinddalen. From the parking area there is a well-marked gravel path along Tverråna, through mixed forest of large pines and some old and impressive deciduous trees.

From the forest the trail climbs steeply up into the mountains, passing numerous tarns. Fossjuvet falls will appear on your right hand. Fossjuvet is a gorge carved by a gigantic waterfall that raged well over ten thousand years ago, when the ice cap that covered Western Norway melted. The melting ice and vast quantities of meltwater also deposited large sediments of sand and gravel. The impressive gorge is comparable to the better-known Jutulhogget in Østerdalen, which was formed in the same manner.

From Fossjuvet, the trail continues across the mountains and into the Vinddalen valley where you hit a road that takes you back to the parking area.

A trail map (Norwegian text only) is sold at Forsand Tourist Information.
