Overview
Details

Join us on a journey through the geological history of Svalbard and learn to be a geologist searching for the treasures of earlier ages. We begin our tour in the laboratory of Store Norske Mining Company. Then we go to the core sample storage, where you will see the overwhelming results of the coal prospecting in and around Longyearbyen. You will look deep inside the mountains and far back in time through the samples being collected over the last 50 years. Our final stop is Mine 3, and abandoned coal mine. Coal is what has kept Longyearbyen alive, and we will see how it is created, and how your new geology skills has made your ready to venture into the Svalbard wilderness in search for riches hidden in the frozen ground. For the long version of the tour, you will have lunch in the miners break room, and then join a guided tour inside the mine.

Experience a day as an exploration geologist, in cooperation with Store Norske Mining Company

NOTICE
Due to the extreme weather this fall, the road to Endalen valley is impassable. The tour is therefore shortened by 1 hour, and we will not visit the core sample storage in Endalen valley. The price has been reduced.

Did you know that Svalbard was once a hot desert? Then, millions of years later, a deep forest of huge trees. Longyearbyen was in the shade of giant mammoth trees, and hippopotamus-like animals walked around. Climate change and tectonic plate movements through the eons has given Svalbard its geological heritage that today founds the basis for human settlement.
