The story of Mortholmen Sildesalteri

Mortholmens Sildesalteri in Åkrehamn, Karmøy, has a rich history that reflects Norway's proud maritime heritage. During the herring boom in the early 1900s, Mortholmen played a crucial role in the fishing industry with its large salting capacity. Herring catches from the coast were salted and exported throughout Europe, contributing to local prosperity.

45 years after production at Mortholmen was shut down, John Ståle Egge, Ludvig Egge and Oddrun Østevik and their families began the restoration of Mortholmen. Two of the herring tanks were converted into a living room and kitchen, and the last herring tank was furnished with a stage and seating.

In 2020, the world's most famous crab fisherman, Sig Hansen, became an owner. Today he is the sole owner and has completed the restoration of the building with the aim of preserving the rich history that lies within its battered walls. Inside and out, Mortholmen has undergone extensive restoration and is a living reminder of Norway's herring adventure and a unique experience that you can take part in.

Welcome to Norway's only preserved herring saltery!
