Gunnarsholmen was originally an old coastal fortress built for the protection Kragerø back in the 18th and 19th century. Today it is an open area with excellent swimming opportuneties including a beach and a salt water swimmingpool, kiosk, lawn area and service facilities. The small island is located a just short walk from the town center.

In 1808 tried the English frigate "Tarter" to invade the town, but was chased by the canons of the coastal fort. The fort has been restored to its original condition, and is connected to the mainland by a pier. Every year Gunnarsholmen is visited by tourists and locals. The anchor by the coastal fort is from around 1850 and was found in Tallakshavn in Kragerø.

Gunnarsholmen also has a special ramp enabling handicapted and wheelchair users to enjoy both the pool and the sea.
