Halden station is not only a transport hub, but also a building full of history and character. Over the years, this drive has witnessed life's many travels and adventures.
The station was opened as Fredrikshald station in 1879 at the inauguration of the Østfold Line
and was given its current name in 1928. The building was designed by Peter Andreas Blix and
today stands as a protected treasure. The station building is a beautiful example of the romantic
style of the time, inspired by both medieval German castles and Gothic. The first train from the
capital arrived at the station's covered railway hall on 2 January 1879, a building structure that
was later demolished. The official inauguration of the Smaalen Line took place on 18 July 1879.
The opening was carried out by King Oscar II, which was marked with a Portal of Honour for the
King erected on the city bridge over the railway and a gala dinner in Haldens Klub.
