From Finland to Norway via Halti – a multiday wilderness trek. One of the most impressive ways to arrive to Norway is a journey through a large wilderness area crossing the border at Finland’s highest peak and continuing down to Lyngenfjord.
One mountain, two countries – Hiking to Norway over Finland’s highest peak (Halti).
Hiking in the arctic landscape is a unique experience. On this trek, we travel to Norway in a different way; on foot, in the middle of arctic wilderness.
Highlights of this guided trek:
- guided hike in one of Europe’s last wilderness areas
- remote locations
- two countries, highest peaks of Finland
- professional guide and small groups
- overnight in reservation huts
We start this arctic summer hike from a small remote village called Kilpisjärvi in Finland. The first days of the hike take us through vast open tundra, one rolling slope after another. On the evening of the second night, we arrive at a green oasis, a low valley where fell birch grow by a clear water lake.
The terrain will start turning rockier, making progress slower towards the peak of Halti. Behind the highest peak of Finland, opens up the view to the mountains of Norway. Crossing the border at the peak, we then start our descent to the valley, carefully balancing on the rocky slopes. There, our car and our bags of clean clothes are waiting for us, and we leave the wilderness behind driving on the side of deep gorges and valleys until we reach the Lyngen fjord.
We will stay the last night together in Norway, with a view to the fjords. In the morning, either you travel with your guide back to Kilpisjärvi, or you can continue your stay in Norway.
Hiking in the arctic wilderness with a professional and knowledgeable guide is a great experience even if you don’t have much hiking on your own before. All you need is a good level of fitness and adventurous spirit. Your guide Gareth, is an experienced outdoor instructor, and he will not only guide you but also teach you valuable skills which will help you to plan your own trips in the future, should you wish.
In the summer, the Arctic summer is at its best; the sun sets late and there’s still nearly 20 hours of daylight. There are plenty of wild berries to pick for a snack and temperatures are perfect for hiking.
