Hankø has been a recreational spot since the 1870s, when sulphurous mud was discovered on the island. In 1899, hare, pheasants and a fallow deer were introduced. In 1930 King Olav bought a holiday home here. The place is today owned by the Norwegian Princess Martha and her her family.
