Hike to Månafossen waterfall and Friluftsgården Mån

Månafossen waterfall is one of Rogaland’s biggest tourist attractions! The waterfall is situated in the Frafjordheiane Landscape Conservation Area, which covers over 400 km². The waterfall plunges into the river Frafjordelva, one of the two major rivers in the conservation area, which was protected in the early 1990s.

Start your walk to Månafossen

The walk begins at the Eikeskog car park, before the path leads up to Månafossen and on towards Mån and Fidjadalen. The first section of the path up to Månafossen is short and well-maintained, though partly steep and uneven. There are stone steps for the first 100 metres, and further steps and chains at the steepest sections for safety. Parts of the path can be slippery in wet weather, so sturdy footwear is essential.

Family-friendly walk

Due to the steep path, the short walk from the car park takes longer than expected, but it remains a family-friendly outing. Viewpoints along the path offer the chance to see and hear the impressive 92-metre-high Månafossen waterfall.

The walk to Mån Farm

For those wishing to extend the experience, the landscape opens up after a short walk beyond the viewpoints. Suddenly, you’ll find yourself at Mån, where Jæren Friluftsråd has restored the old mountain farm. People lived here until 1915 at the entrance to the Fidjadalen valley. If you have time to spare, there are lovely camping spots down by the river, and accommodation is available at Friluftsgarden Mån with advance booking.

Outdoor activities and accommodation

The property at Mån (approximately 8,000 dekar) is owned by Jæren Friluftsråd. The farmhouse has been restored, and a newer building can accommodate around 30 people. The cellar houses an exhibition on the history of the mountain farm, the Frafjordheiane landscape conservation area and outdoor activities in the area. For longer hikes, the trail continues into Fidjadalen valley to DNT Stavanger’s Blåfjellenden cabin (6 hours).

Take care on the steep path

The path to Månafossen is steep and can become very slippery in wet weather. Wear sturdy footwear with good grip and use the chains where they are fitted. Keep a close eye on children and maintain a safe distance from the waterfall, the river and steep edges. Consider the season, weather and conditions before setting off.
