Hike to the Bottom of Vøringsfossen

Experience Vøringsfossen from the bottom of the canyon and feel the power of one of Norway's most spectacular waterfalls up close. After being closed for many years, the old bridge below the waterfall has now been removed and replaced with a brand new bridge, making it possible to once again cross the river beneath the falls.

The trail to the bridge has recently been improved with new trail markings, making the route easier to follow. However, this is still a demanding hike through rough terrain. You will need to cross large boulders and rocky sections before reaching the bridge, so sturdy hiking boots are essential. Please take extra care, especially if the rocks are wet.

After crossing the new bridge, the trail on the opposite side has not yet been upgraded. This section can be muddy, uneven and slippery, particularly after rainfall. Walk carefully and allow extra time for this part of the hike.

Practical information

• Parking: Fossatromma parking area, approximately 17 km from the centre of Eidfjord along Norwegian Scenic Route 7. Please avoid parking outside the tunnel at Storegjel, as this may create dangerous traffic situations. Please only use the parking area at Fossatromma.

• Starting point: Fossatromma.

• Route: Follow the old road for approximately 2 km to Storegjel, where you will find an information board. Continue along the old road for another 300 metres until you reach the signposted trail marked "Vøringsfossen", where the descent into the canyon begins.

• Terrain: First section on tarmac road, followed by a steep trail through rough terrain with large boulders. The trail may be wet, muddy and slippery.

• Necessary equipment: Sturdy hiking boots.

• Elevation: 650–400 metres above sea level.

• Distance: 3.7 km from Fossatromma (one way).

• Duration: 2–3 hours from Fossatromma.

• Season: May/June–October. Do not hike when there is snow or icy conditions.

Please note: This is not an easy walk. Although the route has been improved and the new bridge is now open, the hike remains physically demanding and requires good footwear, careful footing and suitable weather conditions.
