Rjukan is one of the best places to start from when you are concidering a hiking trip on the Hardangervidda.
Most of the area is easy to hike in, and the Norwegian Tourist Association (DNT) and local tourist boards keep networks of marked trails open and there are many DNT cabins on the mountain plateau.
There are many places where you can start off on a hike and lots of different routes you can choose.
You can begin your trip from several locations: taking the M/B Fjellvåken across Lake Møsvatn to Mogen Turisthytte cabin, taking the Krossobanen cable car up to Gvepseborg, beginning at Kalhovd Turisthytte, or taking the M/B Mårfjord to Mårbu Turisthytte cabin. There are also shorter, clearly signposted paths in the area.
Rjukan Tourist Information Office can help you with more detailed information and suggestions for hikes.
