The Hilta-house is a museum located on the small island Røvær. It is the oldest house on the island. It is centrally placed close to the meetinghouse and the school, and only a few hundred metres from the sea. Once the lot was the county court yard.
The house has got its name from the last family living there (the Hilt family). A lot of old items reflect the history of the island and the living conditions of the inhabitants.
One of the rooms is dedicated to the Røvær tragedy in 1899.
The house was originally a farmhouse, but functioned later as a kårhus (a house where the old generation lived after the young people had taken over the farm). In the 1880s one of the rooms was used as a schoolhouse. At that time there was no regular teacher at Røvær, but an ambulant teacher visited and taught for a couple of weeks.
About 1980 the descendants of the Hilt family gave the house to the history society. They own the house today.
To get to Røvær you will have to go by boat from central Haugesund. The trip takes approximately 20 minutes. The Hilta house is centrally placed close to the meetinghouse and the school, and only a few hundred metres from the sea.
