Hjelmeland municipality is located in Ryfyke, in Rogaland. The administrative centre is found in Hjelmelandvågen and the municipality includes other villages like Fister, Årdal and Jøsenfjorden.

The world's largest halibut plant is located in the fjord in front of Tytlandsvik. Sand from Årdal has been used to build the bridge connection across Øresund (bridge between Sweden and Denmark).
