Rondane National Park
Rondane National Park, covering 572 sq km, was awarded protected status in 1962. In its heart is the majestic Rondane massif – often hailed as the most beautiful and spectacular mountain range in Norway. New roads, lodges/cabins or other encroachment are not permitted in the area. All vegetation is protected. Even the larger trees are left standing as these provide habitats for birds. Motor vehicles are not permitted.
Rondane National Park has a typical high-mountain landscape, with large areas at over 1445 metre altitude. Ten peaks tower over 2000 m above sea level; Rondslottet (2178) and Storranden (2138) are the highest.
Traces from when the area was covered by ice can be found all over Rondane. Narrow valleys, canyons and large terraces are all remnants of the last Ice Age. The protection of Rondane ensures that you as visitors are guaranteed a wonderful nature experience, but also places obligations on you as our guests to look after these natural riches.
A total of 124 different species of bird and 28 types of mammal have been observed in Rondane. 20 of these have this as their permanent habitat. The area is also home to 240 different tall plant species, and over 300 types of moss and lichen.
