Made for the future - join us today! Join Hurtigruten Svalbard and Brim Explorer on a hybrid-driven speedboat to Pyramiden. With our new vessel you can join an exciting and more environmentally friendly boat trip, to the Nordenskiöld glacier, and the fascinating Russian town of Pyramiden.
Close to nature in an environmentally friendly way
The boat MS Bard has the greenest technology available on the market. This is in line with the other developments in Hurtigruten such as launching MS Roald Amundsen, the world's first hybrid-driven cruise ship in 2019, and rebuilding their existing cruise ships to run on large battery packs, natural- and biogas - made from organic waste. Svalbard is known for its Arctic silence, and with the silent electric catamaran you will experience this in the best possible way. The boat is emission-free when it goes on electricity, and we are very proud to be able to introduce this type of transport here in the Arctic waters.
An Arctic ghost town
While the new green technology is something for the future, visiting the town of Pyramiden is like entering a time machine and returning to the Soviet Union. In the 1980s, over 1000 people lived in the city, and it was considered a successful community with school, kindergarten, swimming pool, sports fields and coal mining. In 1998, the Russian mining company Trust Arktikugol closed the coal mine, and the city was vacated in a very short time. Coffee cups are left behind on the tables, books are shattered in the classroom, and the sheet music lies ready on the piano - waiting for someone to play. These days only a handful of people work and live in the city, and for visitors it is a very special experience to get a guided tour around the abandoned buildings, in this very exiting city of Pyramiden.
Unique experiences
The conditions on Svalbard change a lot throughout the year, and a trip to Pyramiden during the midnight sun in May will be different than when the polar night approaches in October. Whatever the season, you can expect unique experiences in beautiful Svalbard nature. Early in the season the Billefjord may still be ice covered, and landing in Pyramiden will then not be possible. The boat will then instead - silently - follow the ice edge where the opportunity to see wildlife is great! We will also enjoy the very beautiful Nordenskiöld glacier.
MS Bard is equipped with modern design and innovative technological solutions such as underwater microphones and underwater drones, creating a unique platform for exploring the sea, nature and wildlife beneath, as well as over water.
Practical information
MS Bard is one of the first sightseeing boats in the world to run full-day power tours, specially designed for its purpose. When the boat goes over 10 knots on the transport stages to Barentsburg and Pyramiden, a hybrid solution with brand new, fuel-saving technology enters. When the boat approaches glaciers, wildlife or settlements, it will run silently on 100% electricity.
