Overview

The hike to Røksbufjellet and Jøronnatten is for those who like physical challenges and breathtaking nature. High peaks, beautiful views, great fishing waters and wild waterfalls are some of the things you will encounter on this hike.

JØRONATTEN

The journey starts at the parking place just nearby Røksbu. You get here by driving to Oterholt and continue further up Livegen to the top of Liheia. From the toll bar, drive towards Stavsholt. After about 5km you will see the parking place and the information sign by Bø Turlag, with map and description of the journey.

The path follows a tractor road up the steep hillside to Smylestul, where it splits in two. Follow the path to the left, and after a while you will get to lake Langetjønn. Now we have put the forrest behind us, and it is time for a break! After passing Åstul, you can choose the path up towards the top of Jøronatten, or the easier path passing lake Jøronattjønna. The paths meet again by Småholman. Jøronatten is one of the best visited mountains at Lifjell. There is a cairn with a guestbook at the top. From here, the path returns to Småholman and Holmen, and continues further down to Valjuvet, Smylestul and down to the parking area. For the ones that wish to walk outside the marked paths, a journey over Røkbufjellet mountain can be tempting. Here you will find good lakes for fishing and nice peaks.

VALJUVHOLA

The path through Valjuvet goes under Valjuvsnatten and Valjuvshola. The saying claims that a dog once where chased into the cave. The dog then came out in Hjartdal, with a burned fure! The cave is visited and portrayed by town historian Gregar Nordbø (1859-1940). Nordbø managed to climb only 20 metres inside the cave before it ended, so the story about the dog coming out in Hjartdal remains a mystery.

The journey from Røksbu to Jøronatten is the fastest way to the highlands of Lifjell. The journey offers physical challenges and magnificent landscape. You will meet high peaks, beautiful scenery, good lakes for fishing and narrow rivers with waterfalls and rapids.

Jøronatten (1275 m.a.s.) is one of the highest peaks at Lifjell.
