In her atelier at her home in Åsa, Karianne Gruer Torp is standing with her eyes turned towards Steinsfjorden and silhouette of the Krokskogen forest. From here she paints her ambient portrayals of nature, which have become her own very special trademark.
Her artistic expression is naturalistic. The experiences Karianne recreates in her paintings are often described as “bringing nature indoors" - Nature offers such an abundance of hues and ambiances. I am forever fascinated by the changing seasons and the variation in colours, light and contrasts, says Karianne. It is not my aim to paint what I see, but to try to recreate an experience – whether it is the magic of dawn or the twilight. By far the most powerful experience for me is being alone in nature. It fills me with a special kind of calm. I hope that my paintings offer an escape form the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and convey some of the tranquillity I long for and find in nature.”
Karianne Gruer Torp is loyal to her rustic brush strokes. The colours, nuances, rough texture, and exciting use of light create a special calmness – an authentic feeling of something genuine and pristine.
Her small gallery and atelier are located on the banks of Steinsfjorden, just outside Hønefoss. A hidden gem. The gallery can only admit a small numbers of visitors at the time, and Karianne is happy to take advance bookings and arrange viewings.
