Kinn Island

Far out at sea lies the green, grass-covered island of Kinn. The island played a central role during the great herring fisheries in Florø. At the height of this period, as many as 15,000 people lived on Kinn and the surrounding islands. Today, only a handful of permanent residents remain.

The legendary Kinn Church was built in the Romanesque style and dates back to the 12th century. The church has since been altered and restored, with great care taken to preserve its original character. Kinn Church is the oldest church in Sunnfjord and has long been associated with the legend of Saint Sunniva and the Selje Men.

Behind the church, the mountains rise steeply from the landscape, with the legendary Kinnaklova – the distinctive cleft in the mountain – as a striking landmark. Kinnaklova has long served as an important navigational landmark for seafarers. Thanks to its unmistakable shape, sailors could recognise it from afar and use it to determine their position.

Travel by Boat

Travel to Kinn and let the island captivate you with its history, medieval church and breathtaking nature.

From the coastal town of Florø, the scheduled boat takes you through islands and skerries directly to Kinn. Boats depart daily from Florø terminal to Kinn quay – five times a day from Monday to Friday and twice a day at weekends. Additional departures are available during the summer.

Tickets can be purchased on board. A one-way ticket costs NOK 49 for adults, while children and passengers eligible for reduced fares pay half price.

Important: Kinn is a request stop. This means that for your return journey from Kinn, you must call to request the boat no later than 15 minutes before it departs from Florø. Call +47 94 83 86 99.

Hiking

After arriving on Kinn, follow the path to the right towards Kinn Church. The walk to the church takes around 20 minutes at a leisurely pace along a 1 km gravel road. If you would like a longer hike, turn left at the first junction – or visit the church first and then continue around the island.

The circular hike around the island is suitable for both adults and children and takes approximately two hours. Most of the terrain is easy to walk, although the ascent and descent at Høgskaret are somewhat steeper. A marked hiking trail takes you around the island and up to Inste Stauren, the highest point of Kinnaklova. From the top, you'll be rewarded with spectacular views. Allow some extra time if you plan to hike up to Inste Stauren.

You can also hike to the summit of Kinnafjellet. The trail starts from the gravel road between the church and the quay. You can find a detailed route description at Ut.no.

Opening Hours at Kinn Church

During the summer, from mid-June until the end of August, Kinn Church is open to visitors. Volunteer hosts welcome you and are present in the church during opening hours.

Kinn Church is closed from September to mid-June.

During this period, the church is only open on request or in connection with events at Kinn Church.

Food and Drink on Kinn

If you are travelling to Kinn, make sure to bring your own food and drinks. There are no cafés, restaurants or shops on the island, so you need to bring everything you will need for your visit.

Toilets on Kinn

When the summer hosts are present on Kinn, from mid-June until the end of August, toilets are available by Kinn Church.

From September to mid-June, there are no open toilet facilities on Kinn.
