In addition to excellent service, practical facilities, comfortable beds, fresh air and delicious food, Kongsvold guarantees a completely different atmosphere to that you find in a modern conference hotel.

From time immemorial, the traffic between Trøndelag and Østlandet has passed over Dovrefjell mountain. For a long time, Nidaros’ significance as a royal residence was the main reason for journeying over the mountain.

After the Christianisation of Norway, pilgrims began searching for the grave of St. Olav and St. Olav’s kilde (source of holy water), and this continued up until the Reformation in 1536. For centuries, all journeys across the mountain, whether on foot or horseback, went through the mountain farm at Kongsvold. The mountain lodges offered food and shelter to all sorts of travellers.

Accommodation since the 12th century

Being able to welcome guests with food and accommodation, a tradition dating back to the 1100s, has not always been possible. Long ago it was Norway’s King Eystein that allowed the first sælehus (accommodation shelters) to be built on Dovrefjell mountain, resting places for tired and hungry travellers journeying between Nidaros and Oslo.

Today it is not just travellers that stop at Kongsvold. Couples have been wed in the farmyard, silver weddings celebrated in our lounge, and conferences held, all accompanied by almost unparalleled cuisine.

Many have visited this place, that so interested the king, both in past and present times. It was Norway’s ruling King, Frederick IV, who named Kongsvold, when he became taken with this place on his coronation journey in 1704. There’s even a king’s chair with its own special history that your hosts will happily tell.

“When King Haakon VII never got to sit on his chair that had been made by the hosts at Kongsvold for his visit in 1921, the chair was put away in the storehouse. And there it remained until 2001, when King Harald V visited Kongsvold and heard the story of the king’s chair”.
