What did a prosperous farm in West-Telemark look like about 200 years ago? At Kviteseid Museum of Local History you will find the answer. In the museum area you also find a sculpture exhibition by the artist Gunnar Utsond and Kviteseid Old Church, a beautiful stone church from the 1200th century.
Kviteseid museum of local history is an open-air museum showing a prosperous farmyard in West-Telemark about 200 years ago. There are 12 buildings, the oldest a traditional storehouse from the 1300s. The main building, Flekstveitstoga from the 1600s, has a beautifully decorated livingroom, where the walls and ceiling are rosepainted by one of the first famous rosepainters.
Gunnar Utsond
Shortly before his death the artist Gunnar Utsond donated his sculptures to the municipality of Kviteseid. Today you can see these sculptures in the Utsond Hall at the Kviteseid Museum of Local History.
Gunnar Utsond made his debut with the sculpture «Gutt som spikker». Utsond is best known for his sculpture «Helferd», by which he won the first price at the world exhibition in Paris in the year 1900.
The museum is open tuesday to sunday during the summer season (off season: on request). The museum café serves traditional Norwegian waffles, and is a peaceful spot for a rest along the Road 41.
