Leirvassbu is a staffed DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) lodge idyllically located at 1,400 meters above sea level in Leirdalen in Lom. The lodge is one of the most popular gateways to Jotunheimen’s high mountains and glaciers.
Leirvassbu is located at the foot of the distinctive mountain Kyrkja (2032 m a.s.l.)—ideally situated for glacier tours, hiking, summit trips, glacier courses, spring skiing, climbing, and fishing. You can reach about 50 peaks over 2000 m a.s.l. on a day trip from Leirvassbu.
Leirvassbu is part of Høgruta in Jotunheimen, and the 5th cabin you visit during the 5-day ski tour through the heart of Jotunheimen. You can either use the cabin as a stop on a longer trip, or stay here for several days and explore local mountain summits.
History is in the years on the wall: 1875 - 1906 - 1957:
Leirvassbu has been a hub for hiking since the first stone cabin, “Leirvassboden,” by Leirvatnet was built by DNT in 1875. Today, Leirvassbu is a large mountain lodge that has been under DNT’s umbrella since 2023.
The Norwegian Trekking Association has marked routes that go from Leirvassbu to all the tourist cabins in the area. In the winter season, you can follow the winter routes that are marked with twigs.
The mountain lodge is primarily intended for hikers. A hearty breakfast is served, and those who wish can make a packed lunch and fill a thermos. During the day, you can buy coffee and cakes or simple food. The reception sells kiosk items and is open all day. In the evening, a shared three-course dinner is served, and we have a bar with a full license.
Leirvassbu is only 45 km, or about a one-hour drive, from Lom sentrum.
