Take a rest the atmospheric and bike friendly Liasanden rest area on your way over the Norwegian Scenic Route Sognefjellet.

Welcome to the atmospheric Liasanden rest area on Norwegian Scenic Route Sognefjellet. This is a newly upgraded - bike-friendly rest area along Road 55 between Lom and Gaupne in Norway.

The rest area was upgraded in 2024, for the benefit of cyclists and pedestrians, and consists of seating groups, improved facilities for cyclists and a car-free area. Here you can take a small walk or rest on your way passing the The Scenic Route Sognefjellet. The gateway to Jotunheimen has long traditions as a thoroughfar - talking you from the cultural landscape in Lom across the highest mountain pass in Norway to the innermost part of Sognefjorden.

This quiet, sheltered rest area in the forest at Liasand was the first rest area to be completed along Norwegian Scenic Routes in 1997. After 27 years with many visitors and a lot of traffic, Liasanden was rather rundown and had sustained damage to roots and undergrowth. The rest area was therefore ready for a makeover.

The upgraded rest area now has new wooden benches and two roofed shelters that offer protection from wind and weather; which has been a recurrent request from cyclists. The original architect-designed toilets from 1997 will be upgraded but maintain their original design as monuments of time.

As an environmental protection measure, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) has closed the forest to car traffic, referring visitors to the communal parking on the east side. From there, travellers can easily walk into the recreation area.

Newly established vegetation will still be fragile and it may be necessary to cordon off some areas throughout this season.

Architect: Jensen & Skodvin

Norwegian Scenic Routes are 18 selected roads that run through landscapes with unique natural qualities, along coasts and fjords, mountains and waterfalls. The routes are intended as alternatives to the main roads, and the drive itself should be an enjoyable experience.
