Utsira Lighthouse

The construction of the two towers began in 1843. The towers were built of hewn granite (trondhjemitt). Inside they were lined with bricks Utsira Lighthouse was first lit 15 August 1844 and is Norway's only remaining twin lighthouse. Today, only one of its towers is still in operation. The lighthouse stands on the highest point of the island and, being 48m above sea level, it is the highest-placed lighthouse in Norway.
The lenses were made in Paris in 1890 and are still in use on festive occasions and cultural events.

Utsira Lighthouse has been providing weather observations for the Norwegian Meteorological Institute since 1867. The lighthouse is automated.
