An impressive reconstruction of the largest house that has been found dating back to the Viking Age.
In the Iron Age, there were 10 - 15 Chieftain´s seats in Northern Norway. One of these were located to Borg in Lofoten. Borg is the only place where we have found the Chieftain´s house itself.
Lofotr Vikingmuseum consists of an impressive reconstruction of the Chieftain´s house, in full size (83 meters long), next to the site of the original house. In the Chieftains´s house there are several rooms; living quarters, gildehall (feasting hall) and the former animal stable. Today, the stable offers exhibitions on i.e the belief of the vikings (mythologi) and a childrens play corner. From 15th of June - 15th of August, we serve (sell) lamb soup cooked over open fire in the gildehall. You may even taste the drink of the Gods - the honey wine!
In the Glassgården (entrance area with museum gift shop, cafe and exhibitions) you may study archeological finds, learn the history of the sensational findings of Borg and watch the 12 min long film "Dreaming of Borg". The exhibitions and film operates with smart-phones which allows you to choose between 6 different languages. Simply wander around with ear phones and let history be told to you. We reccomend you to bring your own smart-phone for the best experience.
In the Chieftain´s house, the handcrafts of the viking age is being demonstrated. Lots of beautiful and interesting objects are placed in the house, along with intricated wood carvings and other interior decorations.
By the sea, you may explore the reconstructed boat house, the forge (smithy), the activity area and the viking ship. 15th of June - 31st of August you may row or sail the viking ship and try your hand at i.e. archery and axe throwing - all included in the entrance ticket.
Horses, cows, wild boars and sheep - all of old types - are grazing in the fields around the Chieftain´s farm.
The vikings at the museum are happy to answer all your questions. Groups (min 15 persons) may pre-book a guided tour and/or viking meal, all year.
The museum is recommended for families.
