At Lurøy lies the Renaissance garden at the polar circle. Perhaps the world's northernmost of its kind. Here it has been laid sheltered and undisturbed at the foot of the Lurøyfjellet since it was built around 1740.
The first Renaissance gardens were built in Italy as early as the beginning of the 1400s. What featured these gardens was the regular and symmetrical form, fountains and canals. There is reason to believe that in Norway there were less prickly gardens than in southern Europe. At Lurøy there are no fountains or magnificent dimensions, but the plant with plantations in parties is similar. The perennials is planted on geometric like beds, lined with grass and is a symmetrical flat decoration that is also axially aligned with the main building. It took a few years before the Renaissance had found its way north to Norway, after which also came the baroque garden and the landscape garden and displaced most of the Renaissance gardens. Today there are few Renaissance gardens in Norway that are held in their original form.
The generations have come and gone, and around 1890 the garden at Lurøy also established a landscape garden in English style. This style is characterized by rolling trails, planting of hardwoods and water. At Lurøy an artificial dam was built in the north of the garden, and thermophilic woods were planted as oak and bloodbuck.
Please visit our garden. You can walk freely on your own and let peace and tranquility lower while you let the scent of alba roses and cormorants wedge your nose. If you would like a tour, please contact in advance.
Lurøygården is currently run as an active farm. Here we have milk production in new and modern farms, and on the farm you will find the horses Tornado and Maja, the dog Milla and the farm cat Fibi. We are situated at the foot of Lurøyfjellet (689 m above sea level) and in close proximity to the sea with nice beaches and good opportunities for kayaking and sea life.
We offer tours and dining in the old house for groups up to 30 people. Please contact us for a special offer. The premises are suitable for small companies and smaller meetings. It can be both lunch and three-course dinner that we adapt to your needs and wishes. We use as far as possible local products and beef and some milk products from our own production. In Lurøygården we emphasize tradition and quality, and wish to serve homemade, rustic traditional fare. In the backyard we have room for small groups of 10-12 people. Here we would like to serve you pizza directly from the stone oven or fingerfood.
The farmyard is open during the summer and on occasional dates otherwise in the year. Here we serve home-baked cakes, lefser and gomme from Lurøy as well as simple lunch dishes. Opening hours are announced on Facebook "Lurøygården" and on the website Lurøygården.no
In summer 2017 we also offer accommodation in historical surroundings. In the 2nd and 3rd floor of the old house we have 9 beds available. The rooms share 2 bathrooms and the price includes homemade breakfast.
