The Renaissance-style gardens on Lurøy are probably the northernmost in the world. They were established around 1740 in a sheltered location at the foot of Lurøyfjellet (689 m). Lurøygården, situated near the seashore with excellent beaches and kayaking opportunities nearby, is still farmed.
The first Renaissance gardens were built in Italy as early as the beginning of the 1400s. What featured these gardens was the regular and symmetrical form, fountains and canals. There is reason to believe that in Norway there were less prickly gardens than in southern Europe. At Lurøy there are no fountains or magnificent dimensions, but the plant with plantations in parties is similar. The perennials is planted on geometric like beds, lined with grass and is a symmetrical flat decoration that is also axially aligned with the main building. It took a few years before the Renaissance had found its way north to Norway, after which also came the baroque garden and the landscape garden and displaced most of the Renaissance gardens. Today there are few Renaissance gardens in Norway that are held in their original form.
The generations have come and gone, and around 1890 the garden at Lurøy also established a landscape garden in English style. This style is characterized by rolling trails, planting of hardwoods and water. At Lurøy an artificial dam was built in the north of the garden, and thermophilic woods were planted as oak and bloodbuck.
