Møysalen National Park, located on Hinnøya, was established in 2003. The national park is dominated by the mountain Møysalen (1 263,1 m.a.s.l.). A big part of the national park is mountain area, and it is likely that some of the hardest tops, inside or nearby the park, never have been visited. The small town of 8414 Hennes was chosen as administration hub for the area. A guided mountain hike to Møysalen has for many years been considered as a supplementary income for Hennes and the surrounding area.
Already in 1903 the first hike was registered, and the guided hikes have continued to be registered in the following years. Reviewing the yearly guest books, we find the well known mountaineers, as Arne Randers Heen and William Cecil Slingsby.
Around 1980 the inhabitants established a cooperative, Møysaltur BA - Møysal hike coop. The idea was to continue to develop guided hikes, and i 2005 the work was redeveloped with the founding of Møysalen Nasjonalparksenter AS (MNS) – Møysalen National Park Center.
In addition to organizing guided hikes during the summertime, it also lease out premises. Both to the local store and the administrator of the national park. The local camping is also managed by Møysalen Nasjonalparksender AS (MNS) - Møysalen National Park Center.
The biggest challenge of the hike to the top of Møysalen is the ten hour duration. However there are no specifications regarding tecnical skills. Den Norske Turistforening - The Norwegian Trekking Association consider the hike to the top as 4 out of 5. As 5 being the hardest.
The hike start with information before being transported by boat in to Lonkanfiord. The guide always carry a satelite phone, often being the only option for communication, because of the lack of cell phone services.
The securing equipment for the glacier is also carried by the guides. The rest of the group only carry their own regular equipment, food and nutrition for 2/3 breaks. You can fill your bottle during the hike. We recommend shoe wear supporting the ancle as an important detail!
It is necessary that you preregister by e-mail to post@moeysalen.no. The forecast determine whether the hike can be completed, and unfortunately some hikes may be cancelled.
In case of cancellation, those registered will be informed by phone the day before.
In the local area you will find a string of shorter hiking trails, and Hennesheia - the Hennes moor is a popular area with a spectacular view. Here you can see most of Vesterålen, Rafsundet - the Raftsundet strait and Lofotveggen - the Lofoten wall.
