It was built between 1852 and 1860. Already in 1861 the locks in Stenselva were destroyed by waterpressure and were not rebuilt until 1877.
Furthest south we find Brekke locks, 4 locks with a lift height totalling 26.7 meters and the Northern Europe's highest lock system. Further north we find Strømsfoss lock and Ørje locks with three locks have a lift height of 10 m. The locks can be navigated by boats that are up to 25,5 meters in length, 6 m wide and 1.6 m deep. On board you will be served meals and all sorts of drinks.
