Maihaugen is a wonderful place for families! The open air-museum is nice for both walks and playtime all year round.
Maihaugen is like a different playground. Here the kids can get a taste of how life was in the old days and many other fun experiences.
Activities for children in the summer
In the summer there is a lot going on in the open air-museum, especially in the high season from June 15 to August 15.
Visit historical homes with actors dressed in costumes and see how Norwegians have lived before. Join in the popular walking plays for the whole family.
A nice way to explore Maihaugen is to join in the treasure hunt the Message batons, where you you look for the message batons that are placed around the open-air museum at Maihaugen.
In the lake by the mountain farms there are fish, and you can try catch one with an old style bamboo rod.
At the Norwegian Postal Museum you can meet the postmaster. In the post attic you may draw your own stamp or something else.
The train at the station is open during the summer, so you can come in and pretend you are going on a journey.
Maihaugen's animals
There are several animals at Maihaugen. In the summer they are out grazing in the open air-museum. You can meet sheep, goats, cows, hens, pigs, horse and rabbits.
Open all year
The open-air museum is an idyllic destination for children all year round. Several of the historic houses have open doors also in the winter months, so you can peek in. There are also excellent indoor exhibitions.
In the winter the animals are in the barn at Maihaugen, and some days there is open barn and you may visit.
Nice events for families with children are the Midsummer Celebration at Maihaugen June 23, The Children's Summer Day, The Christmas Market and The Children's Winter Day.
