Overview
Details

Mastravarden is the highest point at Mosterøy (154 m a.s.l.). The hike is not so long, however with a rewarding view. It is also a hike suitable for both adults and kids. The mountain has most likely given the name to the island, because the island's name comes from the latin "mons" meaning mountain.

From Mastravarden, there is a broad view to all directions. Towards the west, you can see towards the coastline that has given its anme to the country (Norvegr), from the reef of Jæren in south to Karmøy towards the northeast. And to the south, east and north, the characteristic landscape typical of Ryfylke shows itself with its fjords, bays and lush islands.

There are several possible starting points for this hike. By Mosterøyveien, there is a parking place at Haugvaldstad, for easy access to the hike. From there, go through a gate (please close gate), and through grazing fields. Continue on a tractor road upwards, and turn to the left towards the stone cairn. It is signposted from the tractor road. As the hike is quite short, you might want to go up and down different tracks for variations. At the top, there are binoculars to better see the view. For an extended hike, start by the parking at Utstein Kloster Hotel. From there, go via Jonepytten.
