The Midnight Sun makes its appearance and gives us continuous daylight. Migratory birds return and the hillsides are filled with abundant wildlife. There is something quite unique about travelling through the beautiful winter landscape, with less activity on the slopes, at night in broad daylight.

You will be picked up at your accommodation and dressed up with good, warm clothes and shoes. We will have a briefing about snowmobiling before we head out to the Russian mining community of Barentsburg, located in Grønnfjorden. Barentsburg is the second largest settlement on Svalbard, with about 400 inhabitants. Russians bought Barentsburg from the Netherlands in the 30s. The total population of Barentsburg, Grumant and Pyramiden combined, once made the majority of residents on Svalbard. Today Barentsburg is the only remaining Russian settlement. The people who live and work here are mostly from Russia or Ukraine. Barentsburg is a "Company city", and is primarily engaged in mining and some tourism. The settlement was razed during WW2. Nevertheless there is a lingering historic atmosphere, with Lenin at the top of the hill looking overlooking his people. Barentsburg has its own coal power plant, hospital, museum, hotel, school, kindergarten and culture and sports center. In addition they have pig barns and greenhouses.

We will have a Russian dinner at the hotel . A guided tour is available to gain insight of the settlers the daily life. On the trip to and from Barentsburg, there will be stops and pauses, and the guide will tell you about the attractions as we pass them.

We recommend everyone to drive their own snowmobile, as this is easier than driving with a passenger.

Total milage: about 130km
