Mini Expedition - Backyard Svalbard

A multiday ski tour in the backyard of Longyearbyen – in an area without snowmobiles!

Join us for a couple days of Nordic skiing in the beautiful wilderness of Svalbard. The area we will be skiing through is easily accessible from the end of the road in Longyearbyen, and we have designed this tour for you who would like to experience the High Arctic on skis for a few days.

All our tours are tailor made for our guests, and here you will find two of our favourite itineraries for a mini expedition. The indicated price is for 2 people. If you are travelling alone or in a bigger group, feel free to get in touch with us for more information.

Tour content:
In the mountainous area of Nordenskiöld land National Park you will meet wild nature with high mountains, glaciers and deep valleys. The expedition starts at the end of the road in Adventdalen valley. From there, we ski Eastwards to reach a side valley, and from there head up to the glacier where we set camp for our first night out in the wilds.

We design our itineraries in a way that allows us to take our time and enjoy the surroundings, skiing about 10 to 15 kms maximum each day.

Once we have chosen our camp location, we will pitch our tents and distribute the various tasks to make the camp as cosy as home is. In the evening, after enjoying a tasty dinner and spending some time together, everyone goes to sleep, and rounds will be planned for one person to always be awake in camp, standing on polar bear watch and enjoying some alone time.

In the morning, after a warm coffee, we take down the camp and keep heading up the glacier towards new adventures and landscapes, pulling our pulkas in the midst of the Arctic silence. On day 2, you will really find your pace, and probably find that being out in the wilderness and cut off from cell-phone reception is the perfect way to slow down in our fast-paced world, moving at the pace your body allows in the way of the Norwegian nature philosophy of “friluftsliv”.

3 day-trip route description:
Adventdalen, Foxdalen, Fleinisen, Dalburgbreen, Bolterskaret, Bolterdalen. Camp at Fleinisen and in Bolterskaret.
Price for 2 participants: NOK 31 900. If you are a bigger group, please contact us.

4 day-trip route description: 
Adventdalen, Jansondalen, Møysalen, Rugaasfonna, Drønnbreen, Adventdalen.
Price for 2 pax: NOK 39 900. If you are more persons in a group, please ask for price.

Are you interested in the tour, but uncertain if you experience is enough? This expedition is really beginner friendly, and you don’t need any experience with winter camping or skiing, nor to have extraordinary strength and stamina. In other words, you don’t need to be a former polar explorer!

What do I need to join?
- You need a sleeping bag and inflatable mattress for cold climate. The comfort temperature must be minimum -15°C. We also recommend a sleeping bag liner.
- You need skiing equipment (skis, poles, boots and skins)                                                   
- You need solid outdoor clothing and warm clothing for inner layers (we strongly recommend wool). For outer clothing, a Gore-Tex or similar jacket and pants are perfect.
- You need a waterproof duffel bag to pack your equipment in (we provide the pulka).
- Travel insurance

Other equipment that can be rented if you don’t have.
- Ski, ski boots, poles
- Sleeping kit

Backyard Svalbard provides the common equipment such as tents, burners, food and cooking equipment.

Your guide will have all the necessary safety equipment.

Upon booking, we will provide you with a comprehensive list of the equipment and clothing we recommend, and we are always available to answer any questions you may have.
