Beitostølen - Sørre Hemsing - Vasetstølen (approx. 70 km)
This is Mjølkevegen's most spectacular stretch, but also the most demanding. The mountain village of Beitostølen offers a wide range of activities, experiences, restaurants and shopping and Beitostølen is a great base for cycling, hiking and fishing trips. Enjoy a comfortable stay at the Radisson BLU Mountain Resort where you can enjoy the spa and swimming pool facilities to get yourself ready for Mjølkevegen's toughest leg - the trip over Slettefjell.
From the Radisson BLU Beitostølen, head towards town then turn right at the junction in the center down towards Beito. At the bottom of the hill turn right again and continue towards Lykkja and Slettefjellvegen. After approx. 10 km the road starts to climb up the mountain to the highest point of 1315 meters. Here there are nice wide gravel roads, with stunning views. The descent from the top is rather steep so we recommend cycling carefully, especially in wet conditions. It’s worth stopping on the descent to admire the great views over towards the mountains in Vang, especially when visibility is good. Just before you reach the toll barrier, we recommend making a detour to Sputrefossen on the right-hand side.
After the toll barrier take left and follow Høresvegen, passing the Høre stave church (well worth a short stop). Continue on Høresvegen until you exit on Riddarvegen and follow this road downwards to Ryfoss. At Ryfoss there is a grocery store, café and gas service station (YX). Cross underneath the E16 through the pedestrian tunnel, continue across the bridge over the river and brace yourself for a 10 km climb to the Syndin plateau and Syndinstøga at approx.1000 m.a.s.l. You have now cycled more than 40 km and completed the most challenging leg of the Mjølkevegen route.
The cycle ride continues on fine gravel roads between Midtre and Sør Syndin towards Trøllhovd. There may be a few wet sections. Continue on to Murkelie from where you will cycle with Lake Vasetvatnet on your left hand side, following the signs to Vaset. Cyclists will receive a warm welcome at Vasetstølen, a unique courtyard with log houses from the 1700s and 1800s. Here you can stay in charming cabins, as well as get traditional, home-cooked food. Vaset is one of the region's best starting points for both short and longer cycling trips, with Stølsvidda and Golsfjellet close by. In addition, there are good amenities here, with grocery shops, sports shops and dining places.
