Vaset - Storefjell (approx. 35 km)
This section of Mjølkevegen is the most family-friendly and suitable for anyone who likes riding bikes. The plateau between Vaset, Stølsvidda and Golsfjellet is unique and perhaps the most beautiful cycling area in Norway with countless hiking possibilities. The route is undulating with nice gravel roads and paths, and great views towards both Jotunheimen and Hemsedalsfjella. It is easy to combine cycling along the section of Mjølkevegen with other activities like hiking, fishing or swimming. The route passes through active farming areas where farm animals graze freely, and it is more than likely that you will see animals grazing along the road during your trip. Langestølen Kolonial and Café is a popular stop located along Tisleivegen. Here you can enjoy Norwegian porridge and waffles made in the traditional way.
Starting at Vaset, the route follows Valtjednvegen uphill to Gomobobu Fjellstue and continues on the plateau to the summer farms at Valtjedsstølan (when starting at Gomobu, one is alreay on the plateau). At the Brattåsen crossing you can choose between two alternative routes: either the direct route along Gauklivegen and via Gauklie to Furuset or the longer route via Tyishølt and Langestølen, where you can make a stop at Langestølen kolonial og kafé (open during the summer and until the autumn holidays). Here you can enjoy the Norwegian specialty "rømmegrøt" (a sour cream porridge) and the traditional waffles. Both routes meet again at Furuset. From here, cycle along Naustedokkvegen and cross over the dam at Tisleifjorden (there's a resting area on the dam top with a stunning view over the lake towards distant mountains) towards Oset. The last section leads on tracks through the terrain uphill to Storefjell Resort, situated below the top of Storefjell mountain.
Gomobu Mountain Lodge and Vasetstølen Cabins are the recommended accommodations at Vaset, and Storefjell Resort Hotel on Golsfjellet. They make great starting points for many nice cycling trips. The hosts at all of these accommodations are looking forward to welcome Mjølkevegen cyclists.
This section of Mjølkevegen can be cycled in both directions or as a two-day roundtrip, combining both route alternatives. Bicycles can be rented at Vaset Intersport or Storefjell Resort.
Here is a Mjølkevegen guide you can download to your mobile device.
