Mosvik Museum is a charming, community-run museum open during the summer season and by appointment. Conveniently located near the main road, it serves as a great starting point for hikes in the picturesque “village of Mosvik,” its cultural landscape, and the scenic forest trails and hills surrounding the area.

The museum and local historical society operate under the motto “We preserve the past because we love our village.” Dedicated to safeguarding and sharing local history, they offer engaging exhibitions, self-guided heritage trails, attraction signposts, lecture evenings, an extensive photo archive, and local book publications.

Through various projects and events, the museum has become a vibrant meeting place where knowledge of local customs, crafts, and stories is passed down to new generations.

At the Museum
The museum’s main activity is themed summer exhibitions, including:
2024: "Sports Through a Century"
2025: "Nervika – From Croft Hamlet to Sawmill and Industry"
2026: "Hunting and Fishing in Our Village"

Grande School from 1886
The museum's main building is the former Grande School from 1886. On the upper floor, you can explore an authentic 1950s classroom, where the film "School Memories" plays continuously, featuring interviews with local residents.

The main house also showcases a teacher’s family living room from the 1950s, a taxidermy bear, and several smaller exhibitions.

Adjacent to the schoolhouse is the blacksmith’s workshop, containing tools from the local blacksmith, Ole Gjerde.

Nesstu, a crofter’s cottage currently under restoration, represents traditional architecture with living quarters and outbuildings under one roof. Its interior reflects the period from the 1930s to the 1960s.

The activity house, Kaldalstua, has its own history as a forest warden's residence but now serves as a meeting space and the base for Krambua, a handicrafts outlet.

Nearby Attractions
Close to the museum, you’ll find the Theatre Boat Survikjekta, which hosts performances about Martin Kvennavika, Mosvik Stadion, and the Mossa River. Mosvik Beach is perfect for swimming, and shops and seasonal dining options are just a short distance away.

Heritage Trails
Mosvik Heritage Trail (4.5 km):

This trail takes you through Mosvik’s centre, telling the stories of the people, businesses, and buildings that shaped the village. Starting at Mosvik Museum, the trail follows the Mossa River, past the school and Mosvik Beach, through the village centre to the Nervika industrial area, and ends at Vinje Bruk and the church. Opened in 2022, it features 34 informational stops.

Selsetvika/Venneshamn Heritage Trail (2 km):
Opened in 2024, this trail leads through an area rich in cultural heritage spanning multiple eras. Highlights include rock carvings, burial mounds, trading houses, farms, steamboat landings, post and banking history, tales of impoverished families, the district doctor, the captain, and the blacksmith. With 32 information boards in total, it is recommended to park at either the small marina in the north or by the rock carvings in the south and walk the route back and forth. Take care when walking near the road.

Both trails feature English summaries and QR codes for additional information.
