Join us for a mountain hike in wonderful nature on Svalbard, Trollsteinen. Around Larsbreen there is a ridge shaped like a horseshoe, on the highest point we are 850 mas., here is a wonderful view.
The view during the trip to Trollsteinen is wonderful, even in the darkest time of the dark season. Camera is truly mandatory!
Our hike up to Trollsteinen (850m) is year-round treat which is not dependent on the seasons. Whether in the snow of April, or in the sun of August, or under the December glow of the aurora, we guarantee that you will be leaving Svalbard happy that you took the time for this experience. We walk up through the moraine landscape behind Longyearbyen, formed by the glacier over thousands of years, before crossing the glacier and following the ridgeline up to Trollsteinen.
Trollsteinen, meaning the Troll Rock, is a pillar of stone rising above Endalen and Larsbreen. We take a break here and enjoy the view from the top before heading back down the slope to Larsbreen. We cross over this glacier and the following moraine in order to come down onto Longyearbreen. This is yet another beautiful glacier and, if you're lucky, you might find a 35 million year old fossil that you can take home as a unique reminder of your time on Svalbard.
The hike starts out in relatively rough and rocky terrain, and we may have to cross some small rivers, so a good sturdy pair of hiking boots is essential. Due to the changing terrain and elevation, the hike is moderately challenging in terms of fitness, but no glacier experience is necessary. Depending on the time of year and seasonal conditions, we may need to use either glacier spikes or snow-shoes. Although we provide a lunch and hot drinks, it is highly recommended that you bring along something extra to drink and perhaps a snack.
This trip is dependent on weather conditions, as well as a minimum number of participants.
