Mt. Gryta - MTB

Accessible and varied trail near the centre of Stryn, with many meters for the experienced mountain biker.

The tour can begin in two ways. The fittest can choose to cycle from Stryn town centre. If you want to save a little effort, you can drive up to the cabin area at Tonningsetra.

The tour begins at Esso gas station in Stryn. Follow the road out of the center, and upward toward the residential area on the hillside (north). Follow the Setre road up to the winter ski center (signposted). When you come to the gravel parking place by the ski centre, continue on a gravel road straight ahead with the lift house on the right. Follow this gravel road, over a small hill and down a small gravel hill. The road crosses a concrete bridge, and here is the parking lot.

Park here. Then ride a few yards back, to the left, on a gravel road up towards the ski lift. After some hundred meters the gravel road parts in two. Take the right - the most rugged one.

Before crossing the river turn right up the trail. At first intersection, turn upward toward the left, toward the mountaintop and the lift masts. By the lift masts the path parts in into two, you should turn left towards Mt. Gryta. The trail traverses up through the valley, and it is mostly bike feasible here. The trail crosses a stream, and then a steeper climb begins, up towards the next cut.

At the top of the pass you follow the path along a small lake. The trail meanders further up the mountainside, and is quite steep until it gets more flat. No there is only a few minutes cycling to the top. Enjoy the view of the Nordfjord and Stryn town centre.

On the return follow mostly the same route down as you came up, until you arrive where the trail crosses below lift masts. Instead of going right on the trail you came up, follow the path further down. The trail turns to the left, and goes on the front side of the mountain down to the cabin area. The path becomes very steep and difficult, with narrow switchbacks. Follow this path back to gravel parking where you parked. Here you can either drive down again, or continue on the path down to Stryn.

The path down to Stryn town centre (from the parking):
When you come to the parking lot, take the broad, accessible trail. It winds up the marsh. The trail goes over a small hill, and then down. Then you arrive at a lake on the left side. Turn left here, almost 180 degrees. Follow the gravel road. After a couple of hundred meters there is a path to the left. Please note: the path is not very visible from the road.

The trail goes through marsh and winding terrain, smoothly downwards. You then end up in a floodlit cross country area where you turn left and roll 300 meters. The trail goes down to the right, by a pylon. The trail continue in fun and varied terrain with different kinds of surface; marsh, roots, superflow and stony sections. Towards the end of the trail you arrive by a river, where there are steep and high edge, please note this!

The last part of the trail goes on a carriage road, down to a toll-bar, right above the center of Stryn. Roll down to Esso gas station.
