With contemporary art, both national and international, the North Norwegian Artist Centre aims to surprise and subvert audience expectations.
Do you want a high-quality art experience in the biggest town in Lofoten? Then you should definitely pay the North Norwegian Artist Centre (NNKS) a visit.
NNKS is a centre for the visual arts, which has its administration and gallery in Svolvær. In addition to that, they work on a series of different projects throughout this region. NNKS was founded and is owned by regional artist organisations, and has existed since 1979.
The gallery in Svolvær has a continuous display programme, putting on five exhibitions during the course of a year. NNKS is an exhibition space for Northern Norwegian artists, whilst simultaneously attracting new artists both from the rest of Norway and further afield.
NNKS strives to embrace a wide range of contemporary arts and crafts – by way of different expressions and by using various media. In addition to the exhibitions offering visitors a memorable experience, they also aim to surprise and confound people’s expectations, and hopefully ensure that the audiences experience something truly remarkable.
The in-house art shop is the largest in this part of the country. Here, you will find a broad selection of pieces by regional artists, as well as other Norwegian artists. The art spans many techniques, formats and price ranges.
Did you know...
...several hundred Northern Norwegian artists have had their works exhibited at the NNKS?
NNKS is in the town square in Svolvær, right between the Thon Hotel Lofoten and the tourist information office.
Svolvær is the largest town in Lofoten, and offers a wide range of cultural experiences, including exhibitions and concerts. It is also an excellent starting point for nature treks. A walk to the mountain Svolværgeita is a popular highlight.
If you prefer to stay at sea level, you can indulge in some retail therapy by visiting one of the many shops, take a walk along the quay or enjoy a coffee in the town square.
