The National Tourist Route Geiranger-Trollstigen
The Geiranger–Trollstigen National Tourist Route is one of Norway’s most iconic road trips. The 104-kilometer stretch between Sogge Bridge in Rauma and Langevatnet near Geiranger offers a unique blend of dramatic nature and award-winning architecture. Along the way, you’ll encounter waterfalls, fjord landscapes, engineering marvels, and some of the country’s most spectacular viewpoints. Trollstigen is Norway's most visited tourist road and is one of Norway's 18 National Tourist Routes.
Rest areas and viewpoints along the route
Trollstigen: The 11 hairpin bends winding up the mountainside. On the plateau, you’ll also find a café, souvenir shop, toilets, and parking.
Gudbrandsjuvet: A dramatic, deep river gorge with suspended walkways and viewing platforms made of steel and concrete.
Ørnesvingen: A viewpoint where you can look straight down into the Geirangerfjord and see the Seven Sisters waterfalls – a must-stop for photos.
Flydalsjuvet: Panoramic views over Geiranger.
Impressive architecture
The road is a result of hard work and an impressive piece of engineering work dated 100 years back in time. His Majesty King Haakon VII opened the road in the summer of 1936.
At top of Trollstigen there are viewpoints and steel walkways which allow you to get close to the dramatic mountains and waterfalls. The service building houses a café with panoramic windows, souvenirshop and toilets. The Trollstigen Plateau and the two spectacular viewpoints that provide full overview of the countryside, is designed by Reiulf Ramstad Architects. Everything is built in steel and glass and provides good protection against rough weather. The structure is designed so that it blends in with the surroundings, some parts are carved into the rock, while other parts are built on stone walls.
When is Trollstigen open?
Trollstigen is normally open from mid May until the first snow falls in autumn, and there is no fee to drive the stretch. Please be aware that the road may close at short notice if there is a forecast of heavy rainfall or if there is a high risk of rockfalls.
