Norwegian Scenic Routes Helgeland, which is connected by six ferries, offers a wealth of contrasts as it passes through a verdant cultural landscape interspersed with craggy peaks, glaciers, sweeping coastlines and swirling ocean currents.
Many remarkable natural phenomena are found along this route. In the south you will pass the peaks of the Seven Sisters and the Torghatten mountain with it`s characteristic hole; in the north you can see the Svartisen glacier and the world’s strongest tidal current, the Saltstraumen.
The coast of Helgeland is characterised by a unique archipelago of more than 14 000 islands and islets. Long fjords break up the coastline; innermost in the fjords are industrial communities based on hydropower generation.
Make a stop and try your hand as an angler at Hellåga. This scenic rest area on the banks of the Sjona fjord offers plenty of opportunities for recreational activities. A flight of steps takes you safely down to the water’s edge. From the comfort of robust benches you can enjoy the view across the fjord. Hellåga also has a dump station for motorhomes.
The waiting room at Jektvik ferry quay is built of semi-transparent materials with a fibreglass skin. In the dark season, the service building lights up like a Chinese lantern for travellers arriving at Jektvik by ferry or car.
At Storvika bay, a charming stone-vault bridge has been erected to link the rest area to the long sandy beach just below. This rest area has a sanistation for motorhomes and a separate stop/rest area for heavy vehicles.
Rest area and information centre where you can read about the four tidal currents Godøystraumen, Saltstraumen, Åselistraumen and Kjellingstraumen.
Enjoy the panoramic view from Braset towards the Engabreen glacier and the Holandsfjord.
