Overnight in Lavvu and Reindeer Feeding with Chance of Northern Lights
Spend an unforgettable evening with our reindeer herd and experience the magic of Arctic night sledding and traditional Sámi hospitality — with the option to spend the night in a cozy tent under the stars!
This tour is conducted by Tromsø Lapland.
Get to know our herd of 200 reindeer and join a sled ride of up to 30 minutes through stunning Arctic nature, surrounded by snowy landscapes and, if you’re lucky, the northern lights dancing above.
Your journey begins with pick-up outside the Radisson Blu Hotel in Tromsø. Look for the guide wearing a traditional blue Luhkka (Sámi poncho), who will check you in and guide you to the bus.
Enjoy a scenic 45-minute drive through Northern Norway’s breathtaking mountain landscape. Once you arrive at our remote reindeer camp, our Sámi guide will greet you, give a short safety introduction, and take you to the reindeer enclosure to begin the feeding experience. These curious and gentle creatures may even eat straight from your hand!
According to Sámi tradition, the northern lights have a sound. Sit quietly and listen — maybe you’ll hear it too. While we can’t guarantee when Lady Aurora will appear, our camp’s location, far from city lights, offers perfect conditions to experience this magical phenomenon in all its beauty.
After spending time with the reindeer, we’ll gather for a warm and hearty dinner inside our Gamme (a modern interpretation of a traditional Sámi hut) or Lavvu (a classic Sámi tent similar to a tipi). Enjoy a hot drink and a traditional Sámi dish: Bidos, a savory stew made with reindeer meat, carrots, and potatoes. A delicious vegan option is also available — vegetable soup with lentils, carrots, broccoli, and green beans.
Once everyone is relaxed and comfortable, our Sámi guide will share stories and insights into Sámi culture, history, and everyday life in the Arctic. You’ll also get to see traditional handicrafts and clothing. Questions are welcome — don’t hesitate to join the conversation!
At the end of the tour, while most guests return to Tromsø, you’ll stay behind for a true Arctic overnight experience. You’ll be shown to your tent and introduced to the art of “hot tent camping” — a cozy and traditional way to stay warm through the Arctic night. Then it’s time to settle in, whether that means relaxing around the fire in our small Gamme, enjoying the peace inside your Lavvu, or gazing up at the stars.
Overnight stay details: - Each tent accommodates 1–4 people, with two queen-sized beds separated by a wood-burning stove.
- Solo travelers may be paired with another guest.
