On the first floor, there is a laundry room with washing and drying machines and a separate dry room for the equipment.
The indoor design of the hostel Pomor rooms is in the style of the pomors’ culture. Furniture there is made of the north pine. There are also homespun floorclothes, patchwork quilts, woollen curtains and pomor talismans – “Birds of Happiness” –all these things were brought here from the Russian North. There is also driftwood, the wood that was driven ashore by the sea.
The building itself was constructed and put into operation as a residence in the beginning of 1960s. Major structural repairs were completed in 2014-2015.
Barentsburg is approx 60 km from Longyearbyen. In the winter time you can get to Barentsburg by snowmobile, in the summer – by boat with one of several companies located in Longyearbyen. Trips between Barentsburg and Longyearbyen start at the begining of March and finishes at the end of November.
