The oldest and most famous historical site in Rissa is Rein monastery. It was a royal residence in the Viking era, and many of Norway's kings and queens can lead their family back to Rein. In the 1200s created Duke Skule a nunnery on the farm, and for 300 years it was an important religious and cultural center.
The ruins of the magnificent abbey church is still evident area, although much is lost after the stone from the abbey church was used during the reconstruction of the Church of Our Lady in Trondheim in the 1600s.
The park surrounding the monastery is also nice to wander around on your own. It is put out information that tells about the history and nature of the place. Rein church also has a natural place in the picture. The church is a gift from the community's great poet, Johan Bojer, who grew up on the croft Fætten under Rein monastery. Johan Bojers life is presented in a special exhibition at Rein.
