Welcome to Restaurant Hyskje in Geiranger! Restaurant "Hyskje" is found inside the Grande Fjord Hotel and offers modern Scandinavian style gastronomy while overlooking the beautiful Geiranger Fjord. Short-travelled food is very important for us and almost everything here i local produce from the area around Geiranger and made from scratch with passion. Meat from Ole Ringdal in Hellesylt, salmon from Slogen Mat, cod from the coast around Ålesund, potatoes and vegetables from local farms and beer from Geiranger Brewery are just a few of the things we proudly offer. The name "Hyskje" comes from the Old Norwegian words "Hørschiede" or "Hørsche", which probably orginated from the old word "hors" (horse). Hyskje is now a nature reservoir in Geiranger, but was used by the Grande family as a summer barn for animals from around 1841 to 1978. Before this, the legends says that the place was used as a trading post for horses, originating all the way back to the 1600's. The Grande-family lived here until around 1841, but had to move as rockslides destroyed both the fields and houses. It was tradition that the oldest child would inherit the Grande farm, so between 1750 and 1841 some of the children in the family chose to live at Hyskje, until they found a more suitable place to settle down. The legends also says that Hyskje looked completely different before a huge rockslide destroyed the terrain, and made horse-trading nearly impossible here.
