Rigde ride around Longyearbyen - Backyard Svalbard

  •  /  km From You

Hiking in the mountains around Longyearbyen. The trip goes over three mountain tops and two glaciers. We use small groups and design the tour for you and your group.

Welcome to Svalbard and our ridge ride hike. On this day trip, we will reach three mountain tops and walk over two glaciers. We will also be able to enjoy a warm lunch and coffee on a mountain top with breathtaking views of Svalbard’s wilderness.

Practical information:
In summer, the average temperatures are between +3°C and +8°C and the weather can change quickly, so don’t forget to pack warm clothing. For the whole trip, you will be accompanied by our locally certified guide, who will take care of your safety and comfort, and will be here to answer any question you have about the nature and history around us.

We pick you up at your hotel, and go for a short drive to the beginning of the hike. We will start at the end of the road, and head up to Longyearbreen, our first glacier of the day. Along the way, we might be lucky to meet some wildlife such as Svalbard ptarmigan, reindeer...

The glacier will lead us to the mountain side of Sarkofagen, our first top of the day. From there, we have a fantastic view of Longyearbyen, nestled between steep glacier carved mountains. After a photo and snack stop, we follow the wide ridge from Sarkofagen to Lars Hjertafjellet, the highest peak of our excursion. As we scramble our way up, the ridge becomes narrower, giving us a full feeling of adventure in the alpine.

The top of Lars Hjertafjellet is perfect for a cosy lunch break, with plenty of space for us to sit comfortably while enjoying the 360° view of Svalbard’s mountains, glaciers and fjords. After lunch, we follow the easy horseshoe shaped ridge that leads us to Trollsteinen, our final mountain top of the day.

As we head down, we will step on the second glacier, Larsbreen, and cross it to find our way back to town after a full day of adventure in Longyearbyen’s backyard.

Our guides know the area well, and can also modify the plan along the way to fit the weather conditions or your preferences.
