The Coastal Heritage Centre (Risør Kystkultursenter) is located in an old boatyard at Moen Trebåtbyggeri, 12 km outside Risør town, on the way to the E 18. The boatyard has been in operation since 1916. It provides an overview spanning a century of shipbuilding and boatbuilding, which was one of the main industries in the Risør area.
Building of ships and boats has been a large and important industry in the Risør area. The Coastal Heritage Centre ( Risør Kystkultursenter) provides an historical overview spanning a century of shipbuilding and boatbuilding. The centre is located in one of the old boatyards at Moen, a perfect setting to experience and learn about traditional boatbuilding craftsmanship.
This summer the centre is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Stepping inside the unique buildings you can sense the authentic atmosphere. There are two exhibitions here describing the history of the boatyard. At 3 pm every Wednesday there will be interesting lectures on maritime topics. It is possible to climb aboard the "Stavanger", a Colin Archer rescue vessel from 1904. Children can make their own toy boats in the workshop, and a rowing boat can be rented for a nice boat trip on the fjord.
Thursdays there are freshly baked bread and buns on offer. Fridays are for children. On July 8 there will be a concert especially for children, and on July 15 a puppet show.
Moen is a scenic area with several pleasant walks nearby.
