River boat trip to Sautso

Did you know that Sautso comes from the Sami word Čávžu and Čávžu means canyon? This is a unique experience with a Sami family from Máze. Máze is a small Sami village by the famous Máze-Alta river which is 70 km south of Alta. You get the opportunity to experience the fantastic nature from Máze to Čávžu, Sautso Canyon, in the world's longest traditional riverboat. The area around Čávžu itself is the reindeer grazing area for our family and the construction of the dam caused demonstrations and Norway's largest police action. This resulted among other things in a total reform of Norwegian Sami policy, a separate constitutional article about Sami language, culture and society and the establishment of Sametinget. The dam and the history around it are important for the locals and especially the reindeer herders. In Čávžu you are invited inside a traditional lavvu and are served Sami traditional food with reindeer meat.
