Rock Carvings at Tennes

The figures offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives, beliefs and hunting traditions of people who lived in Northern Norway during the Stone Age.

Stories carved into the rock

The carvings depict animals such as elk, reindeer and bears, as well as people taking part in different activities. Some appear to be hunting with spears and bows, while others are fishing, paddling boats or dancing in a circle.

Although their exact meanings remain unknown, the figures provide a rare and valuable insight into the lives of the first people who settled in the north after the last Ice Age. They lived by hunting, fishing and trapping, leaving lasting traces in the landscape.

The discovery of the rock carvings

The first figures at Tennes were described by botanist Martin Vahl in 1787 during his travels through Northern Norway.

In 1936, Tordis Larsen discovered another field while walking across the grounds of the former Tennes vicarage. After removing moss from a rock, she uncovered a distinct animal figure. Her discovery proved to be the largest rock carving field in Troms.

Several fields have since been documented in the area, including Gråbergan and Kirkely, which are also open to visitors.

Plan your visit

The rock carving fields have pathways, information signs and lighting, making it easy to explore the area and view the figures. The carvings are illuminated in the evening, allowing their shapes to stand out against the dark rock.

Parking is available by the former Tennes vicarage. Follow the signs for Kirkely and Bukkhammaren.
