Out in the rough sea in Herøy municipality you can visit the famous bird island Runde. The little island has only got 150 regular inhabitants, but from April to August every year, more than 500.000 birds come to Runde for the nesting season. Around 80 species have been proved nesting here, and more than 230 species have been observed in total. The nesting cliff is the southernmost in Norway, and the one with the most variety of birds in the country. The bird life is active all year round, and during the winter you can study those species that are roughest, and thrive in the wild and untamed climate at Runde. During the summer season you have the opportunity to join a guided boattrip around Runde, and this is a remarkable way to see the birds and their bustling activities up close. It is also possible to see the colonies by hiking up the mountain along marked paths. Which ever way you chose it is important that you respect that the area is protected due to its vulnerable nature. Runde is also known as The Treasure Island, due to the gold that has been found in the wreck of the Dutch ship "Akerendam" from 1725, and is a fantastic area for diving and fishing.
