Selsøyvik Trading Post is one of Helgeland’s oldest and most esteemed accommodation options. The island of Selsøyvik is beautifully situated along the shipping lane, surrounded by Rødøyløva, Hestmannen, and Svartisen. Here you will find accommodation, a large and beautiful guest harbor, a general store, and a café.
Since 1777, Selsøyvik has been a trading post and inn, and its long history imbues the place with a rich and pleasant atmosphere to this day. At the same time, the place has the feeling of timelessness that is characteristic of these small island communities, and you can feel it as you wander among the historic buildings. Whether you’re staying in the magnificent “Rødstua,” in your own boat at the guest pier, or just visiting for the day at the café and trading post, you’ll notice that this is a place where time is your own.
Accommodation
At Selsøyvik Trading Post, a historic coastal trading settlement, guests can stay in Rødstua, the West Wing of the main building, or in the two new studio apartments Aurora and Sinus, located right by the water’s edge. When staying in the studio apartments, access to the sauna is included.
Rødstua
Rødstua is a charming old log house and the oldest building at the trading post. Together with the main building and the shop, it forms a horseshoe‑shaped courtyard and is centrally located, just a short walk from the shop and café.
Rødstua offers five beds spread across three bedrooms, along with a private kitchen, bathroom, and a spacious living room. The house works particularly well for families and groups of friends.
The West Wing
The West Wing is located on the second floor of the main building and has six beds divided between three bedrooms. The apartment also includes a large living room, kitchen, and bathroom.
From the windows, there are lovely views of the harbour and the open coastal landscape to the northwest. Bright and spacious, the apartment is a good choice for families or groups travelling together.
Studio Apartments
The two studio apartments, Sinus and Aurora, are located right by the shoreline, slightly set apart from the rest of the trading post. Both have views towards the sheltered bay to the west, which reflects the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights in winter.
Each apartment is equipped with its own kitchen, a double bed, and a seating area. The sauna and bathrooms are shared between the two apartments and are located in separate buildings right next door.
The studio apartments are ideal for couples or solo travellers.
Guest harbour
With its large and well‑equipped guest harbour, Selsøyvik is an excellent stop for those travelling along the Helgeland coast by private boat. The harbour is sheltered and offers space for approximately 15–20 boats, with access to both water and electricity.
The guest harbour includes a modern service building with toilets, showers, a washing machine, and a tumble dryer. Many guests choose to stay for a few days and use Selsøyvik as a base for day trips to the surrounding islands.
Fuel is available, with both petrol and diesel sold from a pump on the floating dock.
The service building is fully accessible.
Country store and Café
Selsøyvik’s old country store is an experience in itself. Here, you’ll find a simple but comprehensive selection of the most essential groceries you need for everyday life and special occasions, as well as fishing gear, games, and reading material.
In the cozy café, you can enjoy a good lunch, coffee and cakes, or simply something refreshing in your glass. The old timber walls give the place a warm and cozy atmosphere, but on sunny days, there’s nothing like sitting outside in the beautiful courtyard. Then, you can just lean back, watch the sea and boat life while the waves and bees hum
Sauna, disc golf, and local experiences
The trading post has its own excellent disc golf course with 12 baskets. You can both rent and buy discs at the country store.
Selsøyvik is also a great starting point for kayaking trips. It’s nice to paddle around the smaller islets and straits between Selsøyvik and Rangsundøya, or out towards Sundøya which is a bit further out.
The local ferry can take you to several other islands in the area, such as Rødøy to visit Rødøyløva, or to Gjerdøy to visit Lyngvågen Café and Gjerdøyhamn.
Selsøyvik is connected by road to the neighboring island Rangsundøya, which has several nice and easy-to-walk mountains. Breiviktinden is one of the closest. It’s just under 230 meters high, but in the low landscape, you get a great view of the surrounding islands.
At the end of the day, it’s a real treat to unwind in the trading post’s new seaside sauna. It comfortably fits up to 7 people and comes with both indoor and outdoor showers, plus a ladder leading straight into the refreshing sea. Ideal for rounding off a busy day and giving your body and mind a break.
